How Pinteresting..

Recently we talked about Google+ potentially becoming a Facebook alternative, now there is a new player in the field; Pinterest - pinning your interests.

Pinterest is a virtual bulletin board that allows users to share or "pin" images. Their mission statement is to "connect everyone in the world through the things they find interesting." The images are placed on themed boards that users can customise, they can then be "repinned" by other users to share.

A beta was run in 2009 for Pinterest and 3 years later it has quickly become a successful social media portal for traffic, already overtaking Google+. Businesses can drive traffic towards their product or website and allow customers to share pins.

One of the major differences between Facebook and Pinterest is the copyright. As one photographer discovered, Facebook could get in trouble for copyright violations so why not Pinterest? Users are asked to pin images from their original source and to give credit when pinning the image. If a user is sued for pinning an image illegally, the user must pay for his or her lawyer, as well as the lawyer for Pinterest.

Co-Founder, Ben Silbermann contacted the photographer after her post went viral in order to remedy the potential legal issues. While some changes have been made, Silbermann has told users that they are still in the process of coming up with a fair solution.

Despite the controversy over the copyright issue, businesses are still using Pinterest to create interest among their potential customers. Peugeot used Pinterest to launch a puzzle competition where users had to re-pin images of the cars to solve puzzles. Viewers must find and re-pin the images that are 'missing' from their Pinterest board.

While social networking websites do gather a fair amount of referral traffic, search engines are still the biggest driver in that department. The benefits of using a social media site allow businesses to interact with their customers and personalise the experience.

iPad 3 Review

The new iPad was released on the 16th of March this year with record sales. Millions of people lined up outside stores to pick up their very own iPad 3, so lets have a look at some of the new features.

The Pros:

Retina Display - While most people could probably have gone by happily without this upgrade, having it has greatly improved the pixel clarity of the iPad display, removing all noticeable pixellation.

10 hours of battery life and much faster processing power compared to the previous versions. The new iPad uses a dual-core processor and a quad-core GPU which is why it can handle the new display upgrades.

The Camera - This time, Apple has upgraded the camera to 5 megapixels with auto-exposure, auto-focus and LED backlighting.

The Cons:

4G - Unfortunately this isn't available yet however you can still use 3G until the upgrades are ready.. Until then, this remains in the cons list.

There have been reports that the iPad heats up a lot more than its predecessors, while not enough to cause any alarm (like spontaneous combustion) if your iPad is heating up to the point where it is uncomfortable to hold, it is probably best to put it down for a little while.

It is slightly larger than the iPad2… I don't really view this as a negative because it is still pretty thin and easily portable (as a tablet should be). The new features need space which makes the iPad 3 slightly heavier.

The Conclusion:

If you are happy with what you are getting out of your iPad or iPad 2 and you can live without the added features then you can save money and wait for the next upgrade.

If on the other hand, you use your tablet for more than just browsing then the iPad is an extremely well designed tablet with very few negatives (unless you are really really picky). You can see a full list of features and prices from the apple store, we've just outlined a few so go check it out and decide how much you want to spend!

2012 London Olympic Logo Design - the Good and the Bad

In 2007 the official London 2012 Olympic logo was revealed, its funky feel and bright colours were designed to appeal to a new age, the internet generation.

Many people assumed it was just abstract shapes put together, however in just one night there were online petitions to have a new, better logo created. Almost 4 years later Iran threatened to boycott the 2012 Olympic games if the logo wasn't changed. This is because in it's abstract shapes it can form to read the word "Zion", a biblical term for Jerusalem.

According to the guardian "the logo, a jagged representation of the year 2012, has been said by its critics to resemble many things, from a swastika to a sexual act, but the Iranian government argues it represents a veiled pro-Israeli conspiracy."

Officials of the London Olympics committee expressed their surprise at how long it had taken to make the complaint since the logos revelation and stand by the logo design.

It just goes to show how interpretational logo designs can be, personally I didn't even realise it said '2012' until I started reading more about it.

While the officials stood by their choice, the public came up with more and more images that can be seen in the shapes of the logo. It has even been likened to the cartoon character Lisa and Bart Simpson performing an illegal act…

I would just like to point out that these colours were not part of the original designs, but the power of the internet allows people to create and share their own versions, so… has the target audience been reached? You can be the judge of that.
