Domain names - The Good and the Bad

Thinking of a good domain name can quite hard and time-consuming. Being part of the web design industry, Zise has seen many good and bad examples of domain names and we have decided to provide some tips when choosing a name.

Welcome to domain naming 101:

  • Keep it short if possible. Many of the 3 – 4 letter long domains have been taken because they are easily remembered, however if your lucky you might be able to find one that is not taken.
  • Make it memorable, or at least related to the content or business name.
  • Is it easy to spell? Could you mention it over the phone and not have to spell it out?
  • Try not to use hyphens or numbers if possible. Another option is to register 2 domain names that way no one will get confused. For example: if you wanted the domain www.joe-blogg.com you could also register www.joeblogg.com and that will ensure your visitors don't get lost in the confusion of similar website names.
  • Stick to the well known extensions such as .com or .com.au even if you are a business owner. Most people will remember .com over .biz
  • Think about your domain name and look at it carefully, if you are squishing words together, can it be misinterpreted in any way?

An example we've seen for squishing words together is the name Pen Island. If you put the two words together for a domain name, it spells something rather different! You will need to look closely.. then you'll see what we mean!

However in saying that, it could be intentional and well thought out, remember our second tip was to make it memorable.
